Our blog has focused on eye health and safety lately so we wanted to take time to make eyes fun! Here are some fun eye facts you can share with your friends!
- The average blink lasts for about 1/10th of a second. Try counting while blinking!
- Out of all the muscles in your body, the muscles that control your eyes are the most active.
- Seeing is such a big part of everyday life that it requires about half of the brain to get involved.
- An ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain.
- Birds, cats and dogs have three eyelids.
- The eye has over 2 million moving parts.
- Humans can see more shades of green than any other colour.
- If the human eye were a digital camera it would have 576 megapixels.
- Your eyeballs stay the same size from birth to death, while your nose and ears continue to grow.
- Humans and dogs are the only species known to seek visual cues from another individual’s eyes, and dogs only do this when interacting with humans.
- “Red eye” occurs in photos because light from the flash bounces off the back of the eye. The choroid is located behind the retina and is rich in blood vessels, which make it appear red on film.
- A fingerprint has 40 unique characteristics, but an iris has 256, a reason retina scans are increasingly being used for security purposes.
And just for some added fun a little “eye” humor: A bone doctor and an eye doctor were telling each other jokes. The bone doctor’s jokes were humorous but the eye doctor’s jokes were cornea.
