Electronic devices are a way of life now.  The majority of adults and children have at least one device, be it a cell phone, tablet, computer, or a gaming system.  With the use and overuse of electronic devices, eye strain problems are on the increase but  a few simple tips can help prevent eye strain as becoming a chronic problem.

  1. 20-20-20 Rule:  Every 20 minutes focus on something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  2. Screen/Sitting Position: The screen should be about arm’s length away from you. You should view the screen at eye level or slightly below eye level. Handheld digital devices should also be at or below eye level.
  3. Lighting:  Too dim or too bright can also cause eye strain.  If reading or doing a task that requires intense focus, light should come from behind you.  Dimming lights while watching television or videos on your tablet/lap top may also help to reduce eye strain.
  4. Eye Drops: Tasks that require intense focusing can have a dramatic reduction in how many times you blink per minute.  Eye drops (artificial tears) can help prevent your eyes from becoming dry and/or irritated.
  5. Get Outside: Take a break and go outside for a walk or to sit and enjoy natural light.  And refrain from using a handheld digital device!
  6. Wear Proper Eyewear: Schedule an appointment with your eye doctor to determine if you need special eyewear to reduce eyestrain. Your eye doctor might prescribe specialized lenses, devices, or eye therapy to help with eye strain. Some people may find that the need to cut the time they wear contact lenses to help rest their eyes.

Symptoms of Eye Strain include headaches, blurry vision, irritated eyes that might be red or feel dry, and pain in the neck, shoulders, or back.

When spending a lengthy amount of time looking at digital devices, you expose your eyes to a lot of blue light.  Blue light can cause Complications that include:  cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, retinal problems, and even sleep disturbances.  There are specialized lenses that can reduce your exposure to blue light.
